Determinants of Tomato Farmers Participation in Agricultural Services and Training Centre (ASTC) Activities

Agricultural production have remained rudimentary despite many years’ of technology development and transfer; to reverse this declining trend, several agricultural policies programmes aimed at ensuring sustainable production, improved income farm expansion with added value output become very germane. This study therefore analyzed tomato farmers’ participation in ASTC activities Jos-south local Government Area Plateau state, Nigeria. adopted multi stage sampling techniques. Primary was data collected from 80 respondents, during the 2017/2018 farming season were using descriptive statistics, index, weighted average index analysis Binary Logit regression. The result revealed that 73.8% male; 88.75% had access extension contact. estimated mean for educational training, household size, experience 6 years; 8 people; ₦108,500/ha 12 years respectively. Also, most (68.7%) farmers low ≤0.45; trend is responsible existing productivity crop area. Furthermore, benefits derived participating among respondents significant as indicated by their index. In addition, coefficient multiple determination (R2) 0.7602. coefficients size (0.421), education (0.559), (0.808), (0.485) contact (0.376) statistically significant; implying these factors regression model affected likelihood farmer’s decision participate activities. Adequate labour supply; establishment pilot farms; capacity training; credit, services, agro service centres, information, input supply cooperative formation are strongly recommended.
